Not good flavor
Like others mentioned, I bought two bags of this at Costco. I love the Kingsford Original and expected the flavor would be better. Unfortunately no, the food tastes like burnt rubber. These are definitely not for smoking. I will use them once the smoke has gone away. I am going back to the original as I am not a fan of these ones.

Wow, Love this stuff!
A family member found this at the local club membership store and we used it in his Weber Performer grill and the steaks turned out amazing! Fantasitc char on the outside but even red in the middle.
Ended up getting my own supply (6 bags!) and have been using nothing else on my Weber kettle and offset smoker since. It does burn faster and hotter, but also dials down quickly when you close the vents and then amazingly returns to a high heat just as fast!
I'm a serious BBQer and so control matters and I've never had this kind of control over other charcoal. You will use more but I think it is well work any extra used or the cost.

I'm happy with the longevity of the product
Been using kingsford for many years, 20+. Started a grill this last evening, as a warming fire. For the first time I noticed a smell I've not experienced before. Ammonia. Not at the first fire up, but after I spread the coals. I thought it might dissipate as time wore on, but it did not. I've never noticed this before. Just fired up, and grilled. Excellent results each time. But this, I don't understand. There should not ever, with any natural fire, be any chemical smell.

Professional my!
Hello, I've been using Kingsford charcoal for nearly 50 years. Last week I purchased your professional charcoal and I was very disappointed! I didn't get a longer, hotter burn. Instead I didn't notice any more heat and I lost heat before my ribs were finished! I'm not impressed! Thanks Tim

Dogs love it, I hate it.
Do I need to up my game? I ruined two batches of meat on my trusty Weber grill two nights in a row. The smell this stuff puts off is not what I'm used to. It's kinda stinky. I can't eat food that I cook on these coals. It's yuck.
The dogs are happy with the meat, their flavor profile is butt-hole so I don't really trust anything they like will actually taste good to me. :-)
I've been cooking on a Weber charcoal grill for around 20 years and I can grab just about any brand of coals and have good results. Until now..
There must be a totally different technique cooking with this professional stuff. I never cook with foil. Do I have to wrap the meat in foil now? Do I have to cook the coals down more?
What is what smell this stuff puts off? What am I doing wrong?

Didn't meet my expectations
Found these on sale at Home Depot and bought several bags. I usually use Kingsford Blue, but was all out. Tried these in my original PK Grill to sear ribeye steaks on Grill Grates. Dumped 2 Weber chimneys in PK and never got up to temperature. Tried in my Pit Barrel Cooker to cook and most of heat was gone in 3 hours. Kingsford Blue will usually last 8+ hours in PBC.

I think I love these.
I love Kingsford, and have been using them for years. When I'm grilling, they're my go-to heat source. The regular briquets are perfect for this. When I'm smoking something or need something that needs a long term heat source, these are great!
Here's the story: Traditional briquettes have a "binder" in them, that keeps the briquette together so you can burn it. They traditionally have a smell to them, that after you've burned them for a while, goes away. Perfect for a grilling, but when you're continually adding fuel to your fire to keep the heat up on a longer term smoke, you don't want that smell of the binder going into your food. IMO, it makes the food taste funny. I've always started my fire with kingsford regular Briquettes, then bought a "lump" charcoal (which has no binder) to keep the fire going.
These are nice alternative. I think, I love them. No smell and a higher heat. Worth the extra buck you pay for them.
The trade off you get from not having a binder is you get more ash on your food. To me, its a great trade off. On a long term smoke, I'd rather have a little ash on my food than a bad taste. The ash is negligible (depending on how you're smoking), and the food just tastes a lot better.
Here's my rule: If I'm grilling, I just use regular Briquettes. If I'm smoking something, I'll use these because my food tastes better.
Glad you made these!

Not professional quality
I bought a few bags recently based on the thought that Kingsford states it would be good for smoking. What I found was that the “professional” briquets do not outperform the standard. Yes they got hot, it burned too quickly as I had to use 3 11lb bags for an 12 hour brisket cook. Definitely overpriced for the value I received.

Not so professional charcoal results
I bought 3-18 pound bags of the Kingsford Professional Charcoal and what I’ve gotten is less than professional performance. I’ve been using Kingsford Charcoal all my grilling life. For 25+ years and never experienced such poor results from Kingsford Charcoal. Burns quickly, lots of ash/suet in grill cooking area, doesn’t burn evenly. I would have been better off using a no name brand, but I’m a Kingsford loyalist. I would not recommend the professional series of charcoal to anyone based on my experience.

Expected better
I am a huge fan of kingsford from my grill to charcoal. I decided to try the professional during the holiday with family and friends over. I was impressed with the even heat but the taste was different then my usual with the blue bag or the pecan wood. It was even brought up while the family was cooking. Ill go back to blue or pecan.....

1st time use.
I am a big fan of kingsford original (blue bag) charcoal. So when I was at my local Costco, I ran into kinsford professional charcoal, 2 18lbs for 13.99 I had to give it a shot. My experience with my cook with this charcoal was not good at all. All my food tasted like chemicals as if I used lighter fluid and it left black residue stains on food.. All my food was thrown away & had to order a pizza so that my fam can have dinner.I will stick to the original from now on.

Has something changed?
Used for several years from Costco with Kettle for grilling/smoking. Excellent results.
Used this past weekend on new Barrel Cooker for 3 rib racks and flavor was off/bitter almost wet cigarette like....there was no flareups etc and I checked temp/fire regularly over the 3-4 hours... I don't understand how this could happen can you offer some help? I would like to switch to Blue based on Mfg recommendation for next cook but I"m still surprised at the poor results.

Flavor was awful
The flavor from these briquets literally tasted like burned tobacco. Maybe this is a bad batch but man it's disappointing. I've used the original and competition, love those but ill never get these again. No I don't use lighter fluid, only brown paper for starter in my chimney.

Competition briquettes
I absolutely love using the competition briquettes in my offset smoker. Usually can find them at Costco at the end of Spring through Summer. My only downfall is that I will barbecue all year round so I am limited on places to purchase this item and sometimes limited on the amount I can purchase at one time.

No heat!
We bought 4 bags of this product from Costco this summer. We have been bbqing for the past 50 years so we know how to cook. However these bags do not heat up enough to even cook steaks. There is simply no heat. So very upset and disappointed. Still have two bags left!!!!

smokes to much smells like chemical bad taste
I don't what has happened but smokes to much smells like chemical and leaves a really bad taste to food. We have been using kingsford charcoal for over 40 years and it is terrible. We use the chimney and newspaper no lighter fluid. Bought a bag of weber 2 weeks ago and will be buying that from now on.

Better than the original
I started using the professional and got used to the higher heat and the low ash, I've read complaints about how brittle they are or a strange flavor in the food. No complaints from my family at all.

Kingsford Professional for the win!
Entered my first SCA competition this past weekend, I purchased the Kingsford Professional for the event. Needless to say i was very impressed Fast start up, amazing high heat I needed for the beautiful grillgrate marks. I was a little worried at first due to the color of the smoke during initial start up but it quickly went away. Great product and will continue to use Kingsford Professional for my SCA competitions!

Lousy
I only gave a 1 star because that is as low as you can give. Been using Kingsford for 45 yrs. great product. Tried the competition brand, one bite of the ribs and I couldn't get the taste out of my mouth, threw out the whole rack of ribs and had indigestion till into the next day. Emailed Kingsford the customer relations guy asked a bunch of questions, I emailed back the answers to his questions, and asked a few of my own so I don't get sick from more of their products.....................evidently do not care, no answer

Awful
I have been using Kingsford original briquets for years and they have been a good product. I purchased professional competition and they are awful. They burn out quickly, leave a sooty residue, and they stink! I want my money back they are so bad.
