3 The Cook

  • When you’re at temp, put cooking oil on a folded paper towel. Grab the oiled paper towel with long-handled tongs and oil the grate thoroughly.

  • Place your hot dogs directly over the coals on the hot side of the grill, setting them down perpendicular to the grate. This not only creates nice grill marks, it also makes them easy to roll and rotate to avoid burning.

  • It’s important to watch your hot dogs closely. Hot dogs burn very quickly, so watch them closely and keep them moving.

  • Once nicely browned and covered with nice grill marks, move your hot dogs over to the cool side of the grill to finish cooking to an internal temperature of 160ºF. This should take approximately 5–7 minutes.

  • To toast your hot dog buns, open them and place them face down on the grill, directly over the coals.

  • Again, watch your buns closely — they burn fast, if not faster than the hot dogs. Toasting takes anywhere from a few seconds to a minute, depending on how hot your coals are.

  • Serve immediately with all of your favorite condiments.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT, but, Everything stated is correct, except using catchup. According to "Nathans" (who originated the hot dog back in 1903) you can top with anything but not catchup. Is considered as the same error as putting catchup on a steak.
